About GeoQuiz

What is GeoQuiz?

GeoQuiz turns world geography into a fast ten-question game. Pick a region (the whole world or a single continent) then pick how you want to be tested: capitals, countries, flags, currencies, languages, continents, or population. Beyond the quiz there is a tappable world map to find countries on, a daily challenge everyone in the world gets the same day, and a pass-and-play mode for two to four people. Universal. It runs on both iPhone and iPad.

Read more Show less

Every question gives you four options, and the wrong answers are chosen to be plausible rather than random, so a lucky guess is genuinely harder than knowing the answer. The entire country database and the world map ship inside the app. There is no sign-up, no network request, and nothing to sync. Open it on a plane and it behaves exactly the same as it does at home.

Key Features

🌍

195 Countries

The full world, plus six continent packs when you want to focus on one region at a time.

🗺️

Find It on the Map

A pinch-and-pan world map where you tap the country you are asked for. Miss it and the camera travels from what you picked to where it actually is, slowly enough to follow.

Country of the Day

One country a day, the same for everyone, in seven rounds that walk through its flag, facts and finally its place on the map. Keeps a streak, with a home screen widget.

👥

Versus

Two to four players pass one device around. Everyone gets their own questions, so nobody can copy an answer.

📈

Mastery

A percentage per region built from your best run in every mode it offers, so breadth counts as much as accuracy.

🚩

Big Flag Cards

Flag rounds lay four large cards out in a two-by-two grid instead of a cramped list.

🎨

Ten Themes

Emerald, Ocean, Lagoon, Sunset, Sandstone, Grape and Rose, plus Midnight, Nebula and Carbon for late-night rounds.

🛡️

Private by Design

No accounts, no analytics, no network code. Nothing leaves your device, ever.

More

  • Score history, per-region filtering and letter grades from A+ to F.
  • Personal bests, automatic detection, with a badge when you beat your previous run.
  • Streaks, consecutive correct answers build a streak that heats up as it grows.
  • Political-atlas map. Every country is shaded so that no two neighbours ever share a colour.
  • Auto-advance, move on by itself after 1, 2, 3 or 5 seconds, or tap Next yourself.
  • Optional timer, 10, 20 or 30 seconds a question when you want the pressure. Off by default.
  • Celebrations, confetti and a fanfare when you finish above 80%.
  • Considerate sound. Synthesized effects that follow your ringer switch and never interrupt music.
  • Haptic feedback, a gentle tap on every answer, switchable in Settings.
  • "Surprise Me", one button drops you into a random region and mode.
  • Any orientation, portrait and landscape, on both iPhone and iPad.

Ways to Play

Four games over the same 195 countries, plus where it all adds up

▶️

Quiz

Ten questions, four options each. Pick a region, then pick which of the seven question types you want.

🗺️

Map Challenge

Ten countries to find by tapping them on the world map. Get one wrong and the map travels to the right answer so you can see where it sits.

Country of the Day

One country, the same for everyone in the world, in seven rounds, flag, continent, capital, population, currency, language, then find it on the map.

👥

Versus

Two to four players on one device, 3, 5 or 10 questions each, with a hand-off card between turns and final standings.

🎲

Surprise Me

One button. A random region and a random question type, straight into a round.

📈

Progress

Not a game, but where they all land: mastery per region, your daily streak, and every run you have played.

The Seven Question Types

Seven ways to be tested on the same world

🏛️

Guess the Capital

Given a country, pick its capital city.

📍

Guess the Country

Given a capital city, pick the country.

🚩

💰

Guess the Currency

Privacy Policy

GeoQuiz collects nothing. No accounts, no analytics, no third-party SDKs, and no networking code at all. Your scores and settings stay on your device. Read the full policy →

Read full privacy policy Show less

CS42.org ("we", "us", "our") built the GeoQuiz app as a free application. GeoQuiz does not collect, transmit, or store any personal information. It contains no networking code, no analytics, and no third-party SDKs. There is nothing for us to see.

1. Information We Collect

None. GeoQuiz does not ask for your name, email address, or any other personal detail, and it has no user accounts.

2. Information Stored on Your Device

The app saves a small amount of data locally so it can remember your progress and preferences between launches:

  • Your quiz results, score, total questions, region, mode, and the date.
  • Your Country of the Day history. Your current streak, your best streak, how many you have played, and the result of the last one.
  • Your selected colour theme.
  • Your gameplay preferences, sound effects, haptic feedback, auto-advance and its timing, and the optional question timer.

This is written to the app's own private storage on your device. Your Country of the Day streak is kept in a container GeoQuiz shares with its own home screen widget, so the widget can display it. That container is still on your device and is not readable by other apps. None of it is ever uploaded anywhere, and none of it is included in any analytics.

3. Network Activity

GeoQuiz makes no network requests. The country database and all imagery are bundled inside the app, so it works identically with the device in Airplane Mode. The Settings screen contains one link to cs42.org. Tapping it opens that address outside the app; the app itself does not load the page, and nothing about you is attached to the link.

4. Third Parties

The app embeds no advertising networks, analytics services, crash reporters, or social media SDKs. No data is shared with anyone because no data is gathered.

5. Permissions

GeoQuiz requests no system permissions. It does not use the camera, microphone, location services, contacts, photos, or notifications.

6. Children's Privacy

Because the app collects nothing, it is suitable for all ages and complies with children's privacy regulations by design. The App is rated 4+.

7. Deleting Your Data

Clearing your score history from within the app removes those records immediately. Deleting the app removes everything it has stored.

8. Changes to This Policy

If a future version of the app changes what it stores, this policy will be updated before that version ships.

9. Contact Us

If you have any questions or concerns about this Privacy Policy, contact us at hello@cs42.org.

View FAQ Hide FAQ

Does GeoQuiz need an internet connection?

No. Every country, flag, and question is bundled inside the app. It works in Airplane Mode and never contacts a server.

Do I need to create an account?

No. There are no accounts and no sign-in. Your scores are saved on the device itself.

How many questions are in a quiz?

Ten per round, drawn from whichever region you picked, with four answer options each. The Map Challenge is also ten countries; Country of the Day is seven rounds; in Versus you choose 3, 5 or 10 questions per player.

What is the Map Challenge?

You are named a country and you tap it on a world map you can pinch and pan. If you get it wrong, the map travels from the country you pressed to the one you were asked for (slowly, so you can follow it) and outlines the answer. Every country is shaded so that no two neighbours share a colour, which makes borders easy to read at any zoom.

What is Country of the Day?

One country per day, the same for everyone in the world, in seven rounds covering its flag, continent, capital, population, currency and language, finishing by asking you to find it on the map. Playing on consecutive days builds a streak, and there is a home screen widget that shows today's country and your streak.

Can I play with other people?

Yes. Versus is pass-and-play for two to four people on one device. Everyone answers their own questions, so nobody can copy, and the final standings handle ties. It is all local; there is no online multiplayer.

How are the wrong answers chosen?

They're picked to be plausible rather than random (for example, other countries from the same continent, or populations of a similar magnitude) so guessing is genuinely harder than knowing.

Can I turn the sound off?

Yes. Tap the gear icon on the home screen and switch off "Sound effects". The app also follows your device's ringer switch and will never interrupt music you're already playing. Haptic feedback has its own toggle beside it.

How do I change the theme?

Tap the gear icon on the home screen. There are ten themes, Emerald, Ocean, Lagoon, Sunset, Sandstone, Grape and Rose, plus the dark Midnight, Nebula and Carbon. Your choice is remembered between launches.

Can I change how fast the quiz moves?

Yes. In Settings, Auto-advance moves to the next question by itself after 1, 2, 3 or 5 seconds, or switch it off and tap Next yourself. There is also an optional per-question timer of 10, 20 or 30 seconds, off by default.

How do I delete my score history?

Open Progress from the home screen and tap the trash icon in the top right. Deleting the app also removes everything it has stored, including your daily streak.

Some country data looks out of date. Can you fix it?

Please email the specific country and field and it'll be corrected in the next release. The database is bundled with the app, so corrections ship as app updates.

We typically respond within 48 hours.
