Read, mark up, fill, sign and stamp PDFs

A PDF editor for iPhone and iPad. Highlight and draw, fill in a form, sign and stamp it, retype a line of text, make a scan searchable, sort out the pages, and turn Word documents into PDFs and back, without an account and without uploading anything.

New in version 1.1

A new design, and every change shows as you make it.

The tools sit in a dock along the bottom of the page with their options just above, and Home starts with the job: pick Sign, Fill & Stamp, Scan to Text or another task, then the PDF. About 42 PDF Editor

What is 42 PDF Editor?

42 PDF Editor is a PDF reader and editor for iPhone and iPad. It opens PDFs from the Files app, iCloud Drive or any other provider, lets you mark them up, fill them in, sign and stamp them, retype their text and sort out their pages, and saves the result back to the same file or to a new copy. Everything happens on the device, with Apple's own PDFKit.

Most of what people need to do to a PDF is small: sign a form, fill in a few fields, fix a typo, stamp an invoice paid, take out a page, add the scan of a receipt. 42 PDF Editor puts those jobs on the phone you already have with you, with no account to create and no file to upload to a website first.

Home starts with the job. Pick a tool such as Sign, Fill & Stamp, Scan to Text or Page Numbers, then the PDF, and the editor opens straight into it. In the editor the tools sit in a dock along the bottom with their options just above, and anything you add can be tapped to move, resize, recolour or delete it.

Signatures, stamps and saved text are made once and kept on your device, ready for the next document. Scans, photos and Word documents become PDF pages, and a PDF can go back out as a Word document, with scanned pages read by on-device text recognition.

One thing to know: Edit Text and Whiteout cover the original content and place new content on top. The original text is still inside the file underneath, so they hide text from view, not from search or copy. They are not a way to redact a document.

The 1.1 App Store set is one continuous picture, so keep swiping.

Mark up any PDF: a report page with a highlighted sentence, an underline and a red pen loop around 92 percent with the note Best quarter yet!, with the Draw tool open in the dock and the highlighter colours and thickness above it.
Sign in seconds: a saved signature placed on a services agreement with a handle on every corner to move and resize it, and the saved signature card with New Signature beside the phone.
Retype text, live on the page: Edit Text changing an invoice due date from 15 October 2026 to 29 October 2026, with the new date drawn on the page as it is typed and the font, size and colour options above the keyboard.
Fill forms in a tap: a volunteer sign-up form with the name, email, phone and emergency contact filled in and boxes ticked, and the Elements tray with Check, Cross, Dot, Date and saved Name, Email and Address.
Scans become real text: a scanned invoice with the Recognize banner, and its recognised words highlighted and selected, with Highlight, Underline, Strike, Edit and Copy.
Stamp it approved: an APPROVED stamp dated 11 Oct 2026 selected on a services agreement, with Color, Opacity, Duplicate and Delete, and the Approved, Paid, Received and Reviewed stamps beside it.
Pages, your way: the page grid of an eight-page report with two pages selected and Extract, Images, Rotate and Delete, and a page number added at the foot of a page.
Every tool, one tap away: the new Home with What would you like to do today?, a search field, buttons to scan, open, add photos or start a blank PDF, and the tools Sign, Fill & Stamp, Scan to Text, Compress, Page Numbers, Split, Edit Text and To Images.
42 PDF Editor, edit, sign and fill PDFs on iPhone: the app icon with mark up, sign, edit text, fill forms, scan to text, stamps, page tools and PDF to Word.

Swipe or scroll sideways: each panel picks up where the last one ends.

Key Features

  • Read

Continuous, page by page or sideways, with pinch to zoom, search with a result count, the table of contents and a page grid.

  • Mark Up

Highlight, underline and strike through text. Draw with a pen or highlighter, by finger or Apple Pencil, and add shapes, arrows and text boxes. Tap any markup to move or resize it by its corners, change its colour, weight or opacity, or duplicate it.

  • Edit Text, Live

Tap a line and retype it. The font, size and colours are matched to the original, and the page shows the result with every keystroke. Change it or undo it later.

  • Fill and Sign

Type into a PDF's form fields, or drop a tick, cross, dot, today's date or saved text such as your name and address onto a flat form with one tap. Draw a signature once, then place and resize it on any page. It stays sharp, because it is written as vector ink.

  • Stamps

Approved, Paid, Received, Draft, Confidential and more, or your own word and colour, with an optional date. They stay movable, and look the same in every PDF app.

  • Scan to Text

On-device text recognition makes scanned pages searchable and selectable, so you can highlight, copy and retype them. The page looks exactly the same.

  • Pages

Drag to reorder, rotate, duplicate or delete. Select several pages to extract them as a new PDF or save them as images, split a document into files, add page numbers, and crop pages by hand or to their content.

  • Scan and Create

Scan paper with the camera, make a PDF from photos, start a blank PDF, or merge several PDFs into one. Insert blank pages, pages from another PDF or Word file, scans or photos.

  • PDF and Word

Turn a .docx into a PDF, or a PDF into a Word document with editable text or with a picture of each page.

  • Stays on Your Device

No account, no analytics, no ads, and no servers. Your documents, signatures and saved text never leave the device unless you share them.

More

  • Watermarks in text or from a picture, with opacity, angle and position (centre, top, bottom or tiled), in front of or behind the page, on all pages, one page or a range.
  • Images, such as logos and photos, placed and sized like a signature.
  • Reduce File Size makes a smaller version by compressing the pictures, while text and drawings stay sharp. Save it as a new file, share it, or replace the original.
  • Export as Images: this page, all pages or the ones you select, as PNG or JPEG at 72, 150 or 300 dpi.
  • Whiteout to cover part of a page, and an eraser.
  • Passwords. Open a protected PDF with its password, and add, change or remove a password when you save.
  • Saving: save in place, Save a Copy, Save a Flattened Copy with the markup drawn into the pages, Share and Print. Leaving with unsaved changes asks first, and the app saves when it goes to the background.
  • Undo and redo for every change.
  • Open in 42 PDF Editor from the Files app and the share sheet. New PDFs, scans and Word exports go to On My iPhone (On My iPad) › 42 PDF Editor, which also shows up in the Files app.
  • iPad as well as iPhone, with Apple Pencil for drawing and signing.

PDF and Word, both ways

Converted on your device, with nothing sent to a conversion website.

  • Word to PDF

From a .docx file, or as pages inserted into an open PDF

    Carries over:

    • Paragraph and character styles, headings, fonts, sizes and colours
    • Bulleted and numbered lists, and tables
    • Links and pictures
    • The document's page size and margins
  • PDF to Word

Saves a .docx you can share or open in Word

Editable Text rebuilds the paragraphs, headings, fonts, sizes, bold, italic and colours. Scanned pages are read with on-device text recognition, and text you typed in the app is included.

Exact Page Images puts a picture of each page into the document instead, for when the look matters more than editing.

Not converted: older .doc files, headers and footers, footnotes, comments, charts, SmartArt and EMF or WMF pictures. Fonts that iOS doesn't have, such as Calibri, are replaced by a similar one, so line breaks can differ from Word. Text hidden with Whiteout or Edit Text is left out of the Word file.

Questions about 42 PDF Editor?

42 PDF Editor is free on the App Store. For anything at all, including a PDF or Word file that doesn't come out right, write to us:

View FAQHide FAQ

Where did the tools go in version 1.1?

Into the dock along the bottom of the page. Tap a tool and its options appear just above it; tap it again to go back to browsing. Undo, Save and the … menu, with Tools, Insert Pages and Share & Export, are at the top. On Home, the Tools section opens a PDF straight into the job you pick.

Can I hide text with Edit Text or Whiteout?

Only from view. Both tools cover the original and place new content on top, but the original text stays in the file, where search, copy and other apps can still find it. Don't use them to hide anything confidential.

Where are my signatures, stamps and saved text kept?

On your device only, in the app's private storage with complete file protection. Touch and hold a signature or one of your own stamps to delete it, and swipe a piece of saved text to delete it.

Does Scan to Text change how a page looks?

No. It lays the words it reads over the scan as invisible text, so the page looks the same but can now be searched, selected, highlighted and copied. It runs on your device, and one undo takes it back out.

Do my documents get uploaded for conversion or text recognition?

No. Word conversion and text recognition run on your iPhone or iPad. The app has no server and doesn't connect to the internet.

Will saving change my original file?

Save writes to the original. Use Save a Copy to keep the original as it was. The app also saves when it goes to the background with unsaved changes, so make a copy first if you only want to try something out.

Can it open password-protected PDFs?

Yes, with the password. The file stays protected when you save, and you can change or remove the password from the menu.

Does it open old .doc files?

No, only .docx. Open a .doc file in Word or Pages and save it as .docx first.
